  • 24-HOUR HOSPITAL CARE

Emergencies can occur at any time. Unlike some other cities, St. John's does not have a specialised emergency hospital. Our own doctors are on call for emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Between midnight and 8 00.am, there is a fee for waking the doctor, whether there is a visit or not.

Live-in staff cover the needs of patients through the night and holidays.

For security reasons, we do not see new clients after hours.

  • BOARDING

We board a limited number of cats whilst owners cannot look after them. We require vaccinations and flea prevention be up-to-date as per our hospital protocol.

Our mission of a low stress environment for our sick patients or patients recovering from surgery does not allow us to board healthy, vigorous barking dogs.

For dog boarding we recommend the following kennel:-

Markwin Kennels, 74 Pearltown Road, St. John's, NL. 709-747-5466: www.markwinkennels.com

  • DENTAL CARE

Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet's teeth. BAD BREATH is not normal and indicates infection. Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet's teeth. We use modern and safe ultrasound to clean each tooth thoroughly - above and below the gum line. Our veterinarians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface, more resistant to plaque buildup. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity.

Older cats frequently have very painful cavities at the gum line. Affected teeth should be extracted or cut back below the gum level. Our high speed drill allows safe removal of deep rooted teeth. Fluoride treatment in younger cats helps to prevent this condition.

Dental care is not cosmetic! It can be life saving.  A high degree of kidney, heart and liver disease results from the increased bacteria in the blood stream as a result of dental decay and gum disease.  How would you fare if you never brushed your teeth?!

  • FULLY STOCKED PHARMACY

Our pharmacy is fully stocked to help provide the proper medication needed to get problems solved quickly. Prescription refills must be preapproved by the attending veterinarian and therefore require twenty-four hour advance notice. All prescriptions repeats expire after one year and will require an annual exam to be refilled.

  • EUTHANASIA SERVICES

Saying goodbye to a long-time friend is painful. We work with clients to ensure their pet's comfort and dignity. If you do not wish a home burial, we will help make arrangements for the reliable services of Devonshire Pet Memorial Services for cremation or graveyard burial.

  • SPECIALISTS

Sometimes conditions arise that require veterinarians with specialized training or equipment.

Although we are able to take care of most diseases in our clinic, and we take referrals from a number of other practices, we refer cases that we are not comfortable with to board-certified specialists at Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island or at Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph.

  • ANESTHESIA

Proper Anesthesia is critical.  This is not the place to "CUT CORNERS."  We have gone beyond the norm because we will NOT sacrifice safety.  Every patient is examined by a doctor and receives pre-anesthestic medications which reduces salivation, allows relaxation and alleviates pain. Patients are entubated, placed on gas anesthesia and constantly monitored by the attending veterinary assistant.  This is a hands on job.  Your pet is never left alone. To further reduce stress, when your pet is waking up, the assistant or Lindsay holds your pet gently petting and speaking to him or her until aware and calm. We offer blood testing through our in-hospital lab to make sure your pet is as healthy as possible before being anesthetized.

  • SURGERY

We offer sterilization of pets (ovariohysterectomy/spay and castration/neuter), declawing and advanced surgical techniques. We offer the most advanced surgical techniques and technology. Anesthetics are specifically tailored to your pet. Surgical services and facilities include fully trained veterinary staff to ensure the safest, most efficient, state-of-the-art procedures for your pet;  apnoea monitors; intensive after surgery care and our in-hospital laboratory allows us to perform pre-operative evaluation blood testing when it is desired or necessary.

  • SPECIALIZED SURGERY
